Leicester gardens tend to be generous in size but often underused — especially when lawns turn to mud every winter. A well-built patio changes that immediately. It gives you a dry, usable outdoor space from March through to November, and with the right materials it requires almost no maintenance year-on-year.
Leicestershire's clay-heavy soil can be particularly unforgiving on cheap patio installations. We always excavate to a proper depth and lay a compacted sub-base before any slabs go down — this prevents the settling, cracking and rocking that affects DIY jobs and budget installs within a few years.
From the period homes in Stoneygate to the newer builds in Kirby Muxloe and Oadby, we've laid patios across Leicester's neighbourhoods and understand the unique ground conditions, planning constraints and garden styles across the area.

Porcelain is one of the most widely chosen patio materials for Leicester homeowners — and with good reason. It's frost-proof, stain-resistant and requires no sealing or specialist upkeep. Large-format porcelain slabs in 600×900mm and 900×900mm formats give a clean, contemporary finish that suits both modern new builds in Kirby Muxloe and period properties in Stoneygate and Oadby. We stock a full range of colours and finishes, from light grey and ivory tones to deep charcoal and slate effects. All porcelain patios are installed on a full compacted sub-base with flexible jointing compound rated for UK freeze-thaw conditions.
Our team arrives and marks out the patio area to the agreed design. Any furniture or plants in the way are moved carefully. We lay protection sheets over existing lawns and borders.
We excavate to the correct depth — typically 150–200mm — and lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. This is the most important part of the job; get it wrong and the patio will fail regardless of how good the slabs are.
A screed bed of sharp sand and cement is prepared, and slabs are laid to your agreed pattern. Each slab is checked for level as it goes down.
Once laid, joints are filled with a flexible jointing compound suitable for UK weather. The finished patio is brushed clean and inspected.
We walk you through maintenance advice, remove all waste, and leave your garden cleaner than we found it. Most standard patios are ready to use within 24–48 hours.
The most expensive mistake. Without a proper compacted sub-base, slabs will rock, crack or sink within 2–3 years — especially on Leicestershire's clay soil.
Budget paving often looks great on day one but fades, chips or absorbs water. Porcelain is more expensive upfront but lasts 25+ years with virtually zero maintenance.
A patio that doesn't slope slightly away from the house will puddle. We build a 1-in-80 gradient into every installation as standard.
Ordinary cement cracks during freeze-thaw cycles. Always use a flexible, weather-resistant pointing compound designed for outdoor paving.
A patio is only as good as what's underneath it. Across Leicester and Leicestershire, the underlying soil is predominantly Mercia Mudstone and heavy clay — both of which move seasonally and drain poorly. Without a correctly designed sub-base, even expensive patio slabs will crack, settle unevenly or lift within a few years.
Every patio we install begins with excavation to a minimum depth of 150mm (deeper on heavy clay ground), followed by a compacted MOT Type 1 crushed limestone sub-base. This provides a stable, free-draining foundation that moves as a unit rather than cracking under freeze-thaw cycles.
Falls and drainage: All patios are laid to a minimum 1:80 fall (approximately 1.25cm per metre) away from the house, directing rainwater to a lawn, border or suitable drainage channel. On enclosed courtyard patios we install a linear drain or ACO channel connected to a soakaway. This is a building regulation requirement for any surface adjacent to a dwelling.
150–200mm compacted MOT Type 1 on Leicestershire clay ground. Deeper where ground investigations indicate soft spots.
Minimum 1:80 gradient away from the property. Fully enclosed patios include a linear drain or ACO channel to a soakaway.
Porcelain and stone patios jointed with a flexible, polymeric jointing compound rated for UK freeze-thaw conditions — not standard mortar.

Everything you need to know before getting started.
A well-installed patio can improve the appeal and usability of your outdoor space. Buyers do notice quality hard landscaping, particularly when it extends practical living space — though the impact on market value will always depend on the wider property and local market conditions.
Light rain during laying is manageable. We won't point in heavy rain, as this affects the jointing compound. If severe weather is forecast, we'll reschedule that phase — we'd rather wait a day than compromise the result.
