A smart, low-maintenance front garden transformation in Wigston, LE18.
First impressions matter — and this Wigston homeowner knew their front garden was letting down an otherwise well-maintained property. The existing frontage was a tired mix of uneven grass and a dated concrete path that offered little visual appeal and required constant maintenance.
The brief was clear: create a front garden that added real kerb appeal and was completely low-maintenance, while retaining a soft, planted feel rather than a fully paved approach. The homeowner also wanted a defined, attractive pathway to the front door that tied in with the wider scheme.
We designed a scheme centred on premium artificial grass as the main surface, framed with granite sett edging. A slate-effect porcelain pathway leads from the entrance to the front door, flanked by lavender planting strips. Young bay and magnolia trees were planted in a border along the road edge to provide year-round structure and eventual screening.
A step-by-step look at the transformation process.
A full measured survey was carried out. The design centred on artificial grass as the main surface, with a porcelain pathway, lavender planting strips and a tree border for structure and screening.
The existing lawn and concrete path were removed and ground was excavated to level throughout. The pathway zone and grass zones were established and separated with steel edging.
Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base was laid across the full frontage. Planting borders were prepared with topsoil and a weed membrane installed beneath the gravel side border.
The slate-effect porcelain pathway was laid on a full mortar bed, edged with granite cobble setts. The artificial grass was then installed and cut precisely to meet the edging on all sides.
Lavender plants were installed in strips flanking the pathway. Young bay and magnolia trees were planted in the road-side border to provide long-term structure and seasonal interest.
The gravel side border was laid and raked level. The full frontage was cleaned down, artificial grass brushed up, and the garden handed over with a planting care guide.
The transformation of this Wigston frontage is dramatic. What was a tired, uninviting approach is now a polished, well-designed entrance that draws compliments from neighbours and passers-by alike.
The homeowner noted an immediate improvement in how the property looks from the street, and commented that the LED pillar lights in particular make a huge difference in the evenings.
Project completed in 5 days. The homeowner subsequently commissioned us for a rear garden redesign — a strong endorsement of the quality of the front garden work.
