A tiered waterside garden transformation in Peterborough, PE2.
This Peterborough property had a significant rear garden challenge: a steeply sloping plot that ran down nearly 1.8 metres from the house to the rear boundary. The existing garden was entirely grass on a slope — virtually unusable as a practical outdoor space and difficult to maintain.
The homeowner wanted to unlock the full potential of the plot by creating distinct usable zones at different levels. After an initial design consultation and AI visualisation session, we developed a three-tier scheme that transforms the slope into a genuine design feature rather than a problem to hide.
The three tiers work progressively: a porcelain patio at house level for dining and entertaining, a composite deck at mid-level for relaxing and the hot tub the customer planned to install, and an artificial lawn at the lower level for the children. Hardwood sleeper steps connect all three, and an integrated LED lighting system ensures the whole garden comes alive at night.
A step-by-step look at the transformation process.
A full survey established exact levels across the plot. Structural calculations were carried out for the retaining walls, and the tier depths and positions were finalised.
Significant earthworks were required — material was excavated from the upper tiers and redistributed or removed. The three platforms were established and compacted.
Two reinforced retaining walls were constructed between the tiers and rendered in a smooth white finish to complement the contemporary design brief.
Large-format porcelain slabs were laid to the main entertaining tier. The bespoke outdoor kitchen island with integrated BBQ and prep sink was installed and positioned.
Composite decking was installed to the lounge zone. Artificial grass was laid to the lawn tier with clean slab edging. The waterfront decking platform was constructed adjacent to the lake.
The hot tub was positioned and connected on the deck zone. The full LED lighting system was commissioned across all tiers. The garden was snag-checked and handed over with all warranties.
The Peterborough tiered garden is one of our most ambitious projects — and one of our proudest results. A steep, unusable slope is now a genuinely spectacular garden with three distinct and functional outdoor zones.
The homeowner described the finished result as "completely life-changing" for how their family uses the garden. The hot tub is now installed on the middle deck, the children use the lawn daily, and the patio is used for outdoor dining throughout the season.
The project was delivered on budget over 14 working days. It has since been featured in our portfolio and generated multiple enquiries from similar sloping plot owners.
