Project Overview

This Kirby Muxloe homeowner had a rear garden that simply wasn't being used. The bungalow sits in a beautiful mature plot — established rose and flower borders, a sweeping willow tree, and a well-kept lawn — but the area directly off the rear doors offered nothing to sit on or bring people outside. The existing ground level made the garden feel disconnected from the house.

The brief was a large, level deck that would create a genuine outdoor room across the full rear elevation, seamlessly connecting the bi-fold doors and conservatory with the garden beyond. The customer wanted something that looked premium and required essentially no upkeep — composite was the obvious choice.

We installed a wrap-around composite deck in a warm teak tone, using dark charcoal/espresso boards for the fascia and border detail to give the deck a crisp, framed finish. LED lights were recessed into the front fascia board, providing subtle lighting along the deck edge without the need for exterior wall fittings. On one side of the deck, dark laser-cut decorative metal privacy screens were fitted to create a sheltered, more intimate seating zone. The mature garden beyond provides a spectacular natural backdrop in every direction.

How We Did It

A step-by-step look at the installation process.

1

Design & Survey

A site survey mapped the full rear elevation, accounting for the conservatory, bi-fold doors, and existing lawn levels. The deck layout, board direction, fascia detail, and privacy screen positions were all agreed before groundwork began.

Ground Preparation

The ground beneath the deck footprint was cleared, levelled, and treated. A weed membrane was laid across the full area before the sub-frame posts and bearers were positioned and set to level.

3

Sub-Frame & Joists

A treated softwood sub-frame was constructed across the full deck footprint, with joists spaced to the composite manufacturer's specification. The frame was checked for level and square before any boards were fitted.

Composite Board Laying

Teak-tone composite boards were laid along the deck using hidden stainless-steel fixing clips, keeping the surface clean and uninterrupted. Boards were staggered at joins for strength and to avoid a repetitive pattern across the full span.

Fascia, Edging & LED Lights

Dark charcoal composite fascia boards were fixed around the full perimeter, framing the teak deck and giving it a defined, finished edge. LED lights were recessed into the front-facing fascia board, adding a warm glow along the deck edge at dusk.

Privacy Screens & Handover

Dark laser-cut decorative metal privacy screens were fitted to the side boundary, enclosing a smaller, sheltered seating area at one end of the deck. The full site was cleaned down and the deck handed over ready to use.

The Results

This Kirby Muxloe project shows composite decking at its best — a wide, level outdoor room that connects seamlessly to the house and requires virtually no maintenance year after year. The two-tone board and fascia detail gives the deck a considered, premium finish that would be difficult to achieve with standard timber.

The laser-cut privacy screens on the side zone add a decorative element that doubles as a windbreak, creating a secondary seating spot that feels sheltered and private even in an open garden. The LED fascia lighting means the deck is equally usable on warm summer evenings — no separate lighting installation required.
